In the latest issue of Eye magazine, John Walters has written “Ultra Process,” a rich, sprawling investigation into AI and how it might affect the graphic design profession. Volume partner Eric Heiman is one of the many people he talks to about this potentially transformative technology. Excited about the tools automating some busy work that will free up time for deeper thinking but wary of how far that automation will go, Eric remarks, “Why are we in a rush to automate one of the best things about being human—creativity and art-making?” He admits that this may be a moment similar to when the Macintosh and PostScript radically changed graphic design but cautions, “It’s one thing to completely upend the way we produce the work.
