Making sure everything in the office is “related.”

When Related relocated its corporate offices to the new Hudson Yards development in New York City, they asked Volume to create a refined workplace branding system that evoked the company‘s ethos and celebrated its new rooftop aerie location. Subtle details intersect with Related’s formidable art collection and a large mural of the Manhattan skyline we commissioned specifically for the project.

With the fabricator L&M, we developed a magnetic signage system that allowed employee names to be easily changed.

Macro-sized graphics in the stairwell provide a surprising contrast to the refined interiors, reinforcing their starker, more industrial feel. The mid-floor landings highlight the formidable height of the building.

We also developed a system of office organizers, stationery, business cards, and other related (pun intended!) applications to further the brand story down to the smallest scale.

For the hall mural, we commissioned the British artist Stephen Wiltshire “who draws detailed cityscapes; and has a particular talent for drawing lifelike, accurate impressions of cities, skylines and street scenes after having only observed them briefly.”

We redesigned Related’s business cards to reflect the new elegance of their corporate headquarters and the national breadth of the company.

The COVID crisis happened while Related’s new offices were already under construction and almost finished. So we quickly developed an extension of our workplace branding system to accommodate new safety protocols brought on by the pandemic.
